Following numerous complaints from residents and drivers regarding damaged and worn-out storm drain grates, the Public Utility Company “Vodovod” Kumanovo has launched an initiative to replace them at four critical locations across the city.
The company stated that the works will improve the drainage of rainwater, reduce traffic noise, and increase road safety during periods of heavy rainfall.
New reinforced street drains and drain grates will be installed on Done Bozhinov Street near the bridge by the Ossuary Memorial, on Narodna Revolucija Street, at the intersection of Blagoj Bogdanski Gucman Street and Treta MUB Street, as well as on Pionerska Street near St. Nicholas Church.
According to Vodovod director Igor Lipkovski, this is the first major intervention of this kind in more than a decade.
“We are not simply carrying out repairs; we are introducing a new standard of work. The new drains are manufactured with steel reinforcement in our facility, while the concrete is cured under controlled conditions to ensure maximum strength and durability,” Lipkovski said.
The company noted that the new reinforced bases will extend the lifespan of the drain grates, reduce noise generated by passing vehicles, and allow for more efficient collection and drainage of rainwater.
Once work at these locations is completed, the initiative will continue in other parts of the city where reconstruction of stormwater infrastructure has been identified as necessary.
Vodovod has appealed to citizens to remain cautious and follow temporary traffic signs and safety measures while construction works are underway.
