A free house in Spain sounds like the beginning of a Hollywood movie about starting over. In the village of Arenillas, however, it is a real offer designed to attract new residents.
This small community in the province of Soria is offering rent-free accommodation, a full-time construction job, and the opportunity to run the local village bar to families willing to settle there permanently.
With only around 45 residents, the village is trying to reverse decades of population decline and keep essential community services alive.
The selected family will receive a renovated and fully furnished municipal house without paying rent, although they will still be responsible for utility bills and everyday living expenses.
The package also includes employment maintaining municipal buildings and infrastructure, providing both housing security and a stable income.
One unique aspect of the offer is the chance to manage the village bar, which serves as a key social hub for local residents.
However, the program is only open to people who already have the legal right to live and work in Spain. It does not provide visas or residence permits.
Families should also know that children attend school about 20 kilometers away, although free school transportation is provided.
Applicants must submit a written application explaining their family situation, reasons for moving, and any experience in construction or hospitality.
